Design Thinking and Shakespeare, a Creative Coupling

Today in 7th grade English, the students launched their unit on Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream with an exciting design thinking activity.  Students read through one scene a number of times to understand and empathize with the characters.  They took on the problem of staging the scene -- making decisions about setting, entrances and exits, and props.  They brainstormed about character motivation and got the scene on its feet.  After running the scene once, they discussed what had gone well and what could be improved before performing the scene one last time.  Everyone had a great time and left the class feeling confident, excited, and ready for more Shakespeare!
