A Message from Nicole Girvan, Director of Lower School.

The Lower School fosters the joy of learning and close student-teacher relationships. At Browne, we strive to continue to finds ways to stay connected with the three integral components: child, teacher, and parent. The parent-teacher partnership is very important at Browne and integral to the Lower School. Teachers and parents work closely to ensure that each child is developing and thriving.

Excellence, diversity, character, and community are the four fundamental pillars that we use to help shape and guide our students’ education and character. At Browne, we are a strong community where students are encouraged to be individuals and express the essence of who we are. Of equal importance is the need to help youngsters establish good citizenship habits, respect for themselves and for others, and pride in their accomplishments in and out of the classroom.

We are a school who works hard to create an environment where there is an appreciation for all learners.

Differentiated instruction is something we aim to do so that we can meet the needs of the individual learner. Browne strives for its curriculum to adhere to current standards and best practices. It is reassuring to know that the entire Browne Academy community invests in the development of the individual child. 

Our teachers work closely together, sharing insights about each child as that boy or girl progresses from one grade to the next, formulating the next year’s classes with the best academic, social, and emotional development plan for every child in mind to build confidence, security, and independence.

In the Lower School, we encourage students to question and explore new ideas, engaging in a wide variety of learning activities and experiences. Students enhance their critical thinking skills through our hands-on approach to subject areas like social studies, science, and math. A strong emphasis on language arts encourages students to develop their love for reading as well as creative writing and public speaking. A thorough investigation of French and Spanish gives students at Browne an opportunity to explore both languages and cultures. We offer specialty classes in technology, art, music, physical education, and library.

Our small class size allows teachers to closely monitor students’ development and challenge them with age- and ability-appropriate activities. Our overarching goal is to guide children in the Lower School as they make a positive and productive transition to the Middle School years fully equipped with confidence, a strong academic foundation, and a curiosity for learning.

We strongly encourage children to develop a level of curiosity that motivates them to become strong independent learners with a wide variety of skills at their fingertips. Within these goals we aspire that all of our students understand and appreciate Browne Academy’s four core values: Character, Community, Excellence, and Diversity.

Lower School News

  • The 3rd Grade Presents Famous Americans

    The third grade class studied an influential person in history and presented in character for the annual Famous Americans production.

  • The Lower School Celebrates International Day

    Kindergarten - 4th Grade classrooms were transformed into different countries around the world and students taught other grade levels about their culture when they visited each country. See pictures here.

  • Mayor Bloomberg Thanks Students

    After the devastating impact of Hurricane Sandy on New York City, 2nd Grade students wrote letters expressing their sorrow and sympathies to Mayor Bloomberg. View his response here.

  • Colonial Day

    The fourth grade had their annual Colonial Day on Friday, Dec. 7. Students participated in lantern making, weaving, embroidery, making bead boxes and hornbooks and played colonial games. Grades K-3 visited Colonial Day to learn about what life was like in 18th-century America.
