First Grade
Language Arts
The language arts curriculum in first grade includes reading, phonics, grammar, spelling, handwriting, creative writing and exposure to many genres of literature. Objectives include developing basic skills to become fluent, independent readers; learning to comprehend, analyze and compare literature; learning skills in oral and written expression; developing good sentence structure; and, learning correct letter and number formation. The beginning of each day is spent strengthening language arts skill through oral expression, writing and reading. Instruction takes the form of small and whole group lessons. Each child has a journal in which to write daily, and students begin to apply the writing process. The handwriting program is used to foster correct formation, spacing and size of letters in printed writing.
Mathematics
The first grade mathematics program utilizes Everyday Math, which focuses on counting; reading and writing numbers; exploring place-value, fractions, time, and money; and, problem solving. Additional areas covered include addition and subtraction facts, patterns, sequences, and 2- and 3-dimensional shapes. Students use tools such as clocks, balances, rulers, and thermometers to measure time, weight, length and temperature. They collect and display data using tables, charts, and graphs. Children use the integrated software to further enhance their understanding of the core math concepts.
Science
Science is taught through small group instruction, discussion and hands-on experimentation. Students use their five senses plus magnifying glasses and other equipment to make observations, classify objects and become investigators in the areas of life, earth, and physical science. As part of life science, they identify birds common to Virginia while participating in the Classroom Feeder Watch program. In earth science, the properties of rock, minerals, and soil are explored using material found on the campus. While in physical science, students perform hand-on experiments to discover the differences between liquids, solids, and gases.
Social Studies
The first grade social studies curriculum explores several different units of study. We provide students with the opportunity to learn about their family, school, community and the world we live in. Students will also focus on the world of work by identifying choices, needs and wants. One of the main focuses at Browne Academy is to introduce students to the global community. The first grade students will discover the countries of Mexico and Japan. Students will compare and contrast their own culture with the culture and traditions of children from Mexico and Japan. The objectives of first grade students are to understand the concepts presented, to explore similarities and differences in children of differing cultural backgrounds and to develop geography and map skills. During the course of the year first grade students will have the opportunity to go on several field trips relating to the units of study and to listen to presenters in the classroom.
French
The goals of the French program in first grade are to expose the children to another language and culture and to increase their awareness and respect for cultural diversity. Students continue to expand their French vocabulary, which is taught through the use of games, stories, books, movies and flashcards. Vocabulary, basic grammar and gender contents are introduced in conjunction with the regular classroom units of study as part of the integrated curriculum at Browne. Both individual and group responses are encouraged during every class. The class also explores aspects of French culture such as music and food and through field trips.
Art
The art program for first grade focuses on the importance of bringing new ideas into their artwork. Students will create artwork that comes from both real and imaginary sources of inspiration. The art elements and principles of design will be examined to emphasize primary colors, line variations, visual & tactile textures, geometric & organic shapes, alternating & repeating patterns and empty & full spaces. Students have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of different drawing and painting materials, apply ink to a surface, assemble a collage, weave over and under and apply textures to clay.
Music
The first grade focus in music is on the instrument of the orchestra. There are four instrument families: Strings, Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion. Throughout the year, the students dissect each instrument, learning about the materials used to make the instrument, its history and background, how the instrument is played, and its pitch sound and placement in the orchestra. In January, we have Fiesta during the Mexico unit and learn traditional Hispanic dances and songs.
Technology
First grade Technology classes introduce Browne students to the computer and teach them to use equipment properly, while learning how a computer can help them academically. Students attend class once a week in the Computer Lab. Basic skills are developed by creating projects in conjunction with other curricula. The objectives of the first grade program are to introduce basic keyboarding using Type to Learn, Jr., technical vocabulary, and to create simple documents with Microsoft Word, Paint, Publisher and HyperStudio in a manner that creates a high level of comfort with computers and computing.
Physical Education
The Browne Academy physical education curriculum is committed to providing students with a comprehensive, challenging and enjoyable program that will be the foundation of an active, healthy and productive lifestyle. All students are appropriately challenged regardless of their physical and athletic abilities. Good sportsmanship is discussed across all grades and is an expectation of every student.
The first grade physical education program emphasizes working together in teams while learning games and safety rules. Students are introduced to the components of personal physical fitness such as cardio-respiratory endurance and muscular strength and endurance, as well as flexibility. They are encouraged to engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity both during, and outside of, school. Team sports (basketball, soccer, street hockey and volleyball) are introduced and basic skills are developed. The meaning of teamwork and sportsmanship are stressed in order to develop these two important qualities for the future.
Field Trips
First graders go on a number of excursions to enhance their classroom and outdoor learning activities on Browne’s campus. Field trips may include a visit to the Natural History Museum for a further study of rocks and minerals; a trip to Moutoux Orchard to enhance study of an autumn unit on apples; an excursion to Huntley Meadows Park to study birds and their habitat; a visit to T.C. Williams High School to enrich study of planets and stars; and, a trip to the National History Museum to see a performance of an African Dance Troup. Second Grade
